Brutally funny comic Patton Oswalt was great on THE KING OF QUEENS. And as a stand-up comic, he always manages to rip the audience up, with his razor sharp wit and comedy. But executives at the new NBC comedy pilot, BEACH LANE, decided at the last moment to fire this comic genius who was set to pair with comic actor Matthew Broderick. Patton Oswalt was cast as Broderick's boss in the new comedy.
Once again NBC proves why it sucks big time.
Matthew Broderick is a little bit of lightweight for a lead actor. In the stage version of THE PRODUCERS, Broderick was easily out-shined by the immense talents of his costar, Nathan Lane. Likewise, Patton Oswalt is an outspoken and great talent, with every bit of the potential to leave Broderick in the dust once again. If NBC thinks that lightweight actor Matthew Broderick can carry a program on his own accord, then they've got another thing coming.
With a team like Patton Oswald and Matthew Broderick acting like a beleaguered foil, NBC had an opportunity create part of the casting magic that made THE PRODUCERS work. Why THE PRODUCERS worked because it was the right cast and right script, ironically starring in a play about the wrong actors and wrong script.
NBC manages to dodge every good opportunity it seems.
